In the United States, college enrollment is declining, and fewer students are majoring in accounting. Since accounting courses mark the entrance to management curricula, a positive impression of accounting is important for motivating business-oriented students to join business and accounting programmes. Ideally, instructors could make accounting fun (e.g. with game playing) and easy; however, rigorous material must be covered and competencies demonstrated to facilitate future student success. This paper provides specific guidance on using class time for engaging activities (e.g. Kahoot!), without sacrificing material coverage, using a partially-flipped class. The guidance is supported by previous evidence of the positive effect Kahoot! has on learning and classroom dynamics. While the course design has been used in introductory financial accounting classes, it can also easily be adapted to other college disciplines and courses.
